One of the questions we often receive from customers who are deciding between using Atlassian’s data center or cloud is about data residency, meaning the customer’s possibility to manage their data location.
Our European customers focus on compliance and data security which is why Atlassian’s decision to include data residency into its standard and premium Jira and Confluence cloud solutions is a big step towards getting more users to consider using the cloud. The functionality is expected to be implemented in the last part of 2021, and it will not undergo price increases.
For Aety, this is excellent news because it will allow us to help our customers located in the EU better and whose decision to use Atlassian Cloud depends on the data’s physical location.
What is Data Residency?
For example, in the European Union, political units have implemented laws and regulations regarding how to handle and store data. Data residency refers to the location in which data is stored. According to GDPR, all companies collecting data from EU citizens should follow certain principles to adhere to GDPR. Also, some countries have further regulations about the location of the stored data (source). Data residency is therefore relevant for the companies who are worried about the storage location of data.
Data Residency and Atlassian Marketplace
Many of Atlassian’s Marketplace partners do not offer data residency for their apps yet. Until now, it has been up to the individual app developer to manage their hosting facilities. However, Atlassian has encouraged its Marketplace partners to include data residency in their apps. Moreover, Atlassian is working on offering its Marketplace partners the possibility to use Atlassian’s development platform for data residency. This will soon mean that Atlassian’s tools, including apps, can be offered as one solution, which will meet the customer’s need to have data placed within the EU.
Data Residency Availability and Roadmap
Atlassian plans to offer data residency to customers with cloud standard and premium plans in Q3-Q4 of 2021. Atlassian will announce changes about the development and launch of the addition to cloud solutions in the coming months. If you want to follow the development of data residency, you can keep an eye out on our website as we will send out updates, or you can look at Atlassian’s dedicated roadmap page here.
